Canby vs. Westview

Friday, September 25th, 2009

Canby

Canby runs the basic high school double wing, motion-sweep, wall, counter, with the QB either leading on a pitch or carrying out a fake to the weak side… Mike Doty, in his 18th year at Canby has these guys running this stuff in the youth programs, so by the time they get up to varsity, they can run it in their sleep… They are very good up front from a technical standpoint every year and they usually are a big ol’ corn fed boys… They will run you into the ground and eat up clock if you let them… But, any time Doty has a quarterback with an arm, he will unleash him… This year they have a new starting QB in Josh Yoder… They brought this kid in, during passing situations last year… From what I remember, this a big kid and has a pretty good arm and can make most of the throws… Expect Doty to test his arm early to see if he is on… If not, he will go straight back to the run game and won’t look back… Their running back is a kid named Adam Bell… Shifty and small (5’10”, 170), but strong runner that will finish his runs…

On defense they have the athletes to run multiple sets and schemes and will do so… Their base D is a 3-4 and they will bring 1 or 2 every play… A lot of zone coverage, mostly 2-4 I believe… If not in the 3-4 they will likely go 4-3 but don’t be surprised if you see a 4-4…

They only return 3 starters from last year… All on the defensive side of the ball… That doesn’t mean much though, Doty plays a lot of kids and has a heavy rotation… 22 seniors on this year’s team… 21 of which lettered last year… like I said… He plays everyone…

Westview

Westview brings a Spread attack on the offensive side… Very similar to what Oregon runs… Coach Greg Fisher is in his 2nd year at Westview and took them to the playoffs in his first season a year ago… Basically what we are looking at in this matchup is new school versus old school football offensively… Westview is trying to replace their Quarterback from a year ago in Josh Hill, who signed with Air Force, but doesn’t seem to be on their roster… Funny how people seem to not show up at the Academies… They also took a big blow to their backfield with Robert Casteel graduating as well… What they do bring back is an all-Metro receiver from a year ago in Hayes Garrity… He is making a shift to the running back position this year though… They also have a transfer TE in Michael Lunen (6’7”, 215)… Yes, it is Maarty Lunen’s little brother… I can see them trying to look JUST like Oregon this year, with Garrity swinging out of the backfield and leaking their big TE into the flat and on the short cross…

Defensively they will trot out the base 4-3… They return Garrity who was all-Metro and all-state last year… Also returning D-Tackle Timote Pongi (6’3”, 395) who was an all-Metro selection last year as well… They will bring pressure on 1st and 2nd down but drop into zone on passing downs… They aren’t afraid to play man on the perimeter… We saw a lot of cover 2-man from them last year… They won’t show many different fronts… But, then again, they are going against a double-wing offense, so they might bring something totally new at Canby…

They return 7 starters on each side of the ball from last year… 25 seniors on the team… If they are going to make a run at Southridge and Jesuit, this is the year to do it… They have already slipped up this year against Grant, but should be able to put together a good season the rest of the way…

Week 3 Preview

Friday, September 25th, 2009

The High School Football weekend off to great start after last night’s showdown of the last two 6A champions on ESPN U. You have to feel justice prevailed following the inadvertent whistle that negated Sheldon recovering a fumble deep in Southridge territory. Bottom line it was a great game, and as the Skyhawks continue to develop timing and chemistry throughout the year, it’s not hard to imagine these two meeting again down the line in the playoffs.

As for the rest of the games tonight, league play beginning for the Three Rivers, Mt. Hood and Central Valley leagues, all three of which appear up for grabs this season.

Could Lake Oswego really start the year 0-4?

Sprague, West Salem and South Salem all have their eyes on a CVL title…

North of the border, Union and Skyview take on more 4A challengers…

Tonight at 7pm pregame coverage begins for our Bi-Mart game of the week featuring #4 Canby at #10 Westview. We will also have live updates from Clackamas at Lake Oswego and Grant at Tigard. We will check in to see if Camas can stay undefeated against Skyview. Our Friday Night Bites crew is at Franklin High School as the Quakers host the Newberg Tigers. And Dirk Knudsen of oregonpreps.com joins me to discuss the top lineman in the state, and who will be headed to big time college programs. Join me at 7pm tonight on 1080 The FAN for our Bi-Mart game of the week and stay with me right after the game for our complete scoreboard post-game show with live reports and scores from all over the State of Oregon and SW Washington.

Week 1 Wrap

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

With just about every school having a game in the books,  save South Eugene, the season is starting to take shape, and the balance of power definitely has a Southern shift this season. Also, the latest on the coaching situation at Lincoln who travels to Centennial this week.

Here are the most recent AP top 10 polls for 6A, 5A, and 4A

As for the outcomes last week Sheldon left little doubt who the best team in the State is right now, there is doubt about Curtis White’s shoulder…

Jesuit barely avoided an 0-2 start with some late game heroics…

Meanwhile Southridge seems intent on repeating as 6A Champions….

South Medford showing no mercy for the retooled Lakers….

Sprague announces their presence this season with authority….

West Salem slows down the State’s top recruit for their first win of the year…

Canby has a new crop of players, but coach Mike Doty keeps getting winning results…

Roseburg another team from the south looking to make noise this season…

The news gets worse for Lincoln high school facing another issue with coaches and police…

Week 1 Previews

Friday, September 11th, 2009

It’s your one stop spot for previewing all the key games around the State of Oregon and SW Washington. Most importantly, tune it tonight at 6pm for our Bi-Mart Game of the Week Pregame show leading up to our 7pm kickoff of Sprague at Tigard. The Olympians were devastated by injuries last year, but head coach Robin Hill hopes senior quarter back Jeff Kidd can guide the Olys back to another deep run in the playoffs. Meanwhile Craig Rucker is the new head coach at Tigard after the last five seasons in Redmond. No more double wings for Tigard, and with a tight 20-19 win over Centennial in week 0, quarterback Ian McGetrick is picking up the pro-style offense rather quickly. Travis Demers, Dusty Harrah and Greg Lord have the call at 7:00pm.

Other big games you should be prepared for, Central Catholic heads to Eugene to take on the Sheldon Irish after upsetting Lake Oswego last week…

South Salem features QB Conor Lynch and the high flying Saxon offense hosting an improved Aloha squad….

The Lakers try and pick up the pieces after their season opening loss down south in Medford against a Panthers squad that hasn’t missed a beat without the catching Singlers.

Don’t forget to sneak out a little early today and join our Friday Night Bites crew at Grant Park beginning at 3:30pm for the Generals battling Westview. Can the Wildcats keep Grant QB Kenneth Acker contained, or will he run wild?

SW Washington also with plenty of action this Friday as Union and head coach Cale Piland heads back to his old stomping grounds at Evergreen.

Plenty coming up tonight beginning at 6pm in our extended pregame show, a live preview from Tigard, and Dirk Knudsen of oregonpreps.com joins us to take a look at the top recruits in the state this year, plus an updated from Grant and Westview. At halftime we will hear from KATU’s Katy Brown and preview the night on High School Blitz with highlights from all over the area at 11:35pm.

Week 0 wrap up

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

Because you don’t have the time to search all over the place for every speck of High School Football news, I will make it easy for you right here. While not everyone was in action last Friday, there were still some significant games that could set the tone for another uncertain year of action in Oregon and SW Washington.

This Friday night on 1080 The FAN, our Bi-mart Game of the Week features the Sprague Olympians visiting the Tigard Tigers and legendary coach Craig Rucker making his debut for the Tigers. Pregame coverage begins at 6pm and kickoff at 7pm.

Last week the Oregon City Pioneers let it be known they are serious contender in the Three Rivers League coming oh so close to knocking off Metro power Beaverton. Turnovers and a failed drive inside the Beaverton 3 yard line in the second half allowed the Beavers to hold on to a 21-16 win. Beaverton quarterback Jamal Kueter was named our Player of the game with a couple of touchdown passes.

Elsewhere the dyansty may be over for West Albany

Another streak ends at Lake Oswego as the Will Storey experiment has mixed results…

The Grant Generals hope this will finally be the year for the PIL to win it all…

In Vancouver, the Union Titans begin their quest to get back to WIAA 3A Title game…

The South Salem Saxons begin their campaign to win back to back CVL Titles…

The Sheldon Irish show why the are my pick to win it all in 2009…

No more Singlers, no problem for South Medford

Don’t forget to help out the kids and stop by our Friday Night Bites festival of beef, this week at Grant Park for the Generals game with the Westview Wildcats. A 4pm kickoff as they continue to raise money to put up lights. Plus, you’ll see one of the best games this week.

The 2009 Season begins

Monday, August 31st, 2009

The Irish have a state champion quarterback and one of the top two recruits in the entire state in Curtis White.

Also, Friday Night Bites is back again for another year as 1080 The FAN helps high schools help themselves raising money every Friday night at high schools throughout the metro area. The link above will show you where our traveling tailgate is heading every week.

Championship Saturday on the FAN

Monday, December 1st, 2008

Hard to believe another high school football season is about to end this Saturday at Reser Stadium. So many questions, can West Albany repeat with back to back perfect seasons, or can Tym Pearson and the Thurston Colts’ high octane offense outduel them? Will Lake Oswego Head Coach Steve Coury finally win his first state championship and the first in school history for the Lakers? Can Southridge assert themselves as the new power in the Metro League and win a state title in just their 10th year of existence?

So much to be decided, and ESPN Sports Radio 1080 The FAN will have all the action for you this Saturday beginning at 3pm with our pre game show, then at 3:30pm the 5A Title game between #1 West Albany and #2 Thurston, followed by the 6A Title game between #1 Lake Oswego and #7 Southridge at 6:45pm.
